Year 5 Curriculum Map
Year 5 Essential Information
Below are some brief details about our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on the new school and any last minute information or changes on the school app.
English: In class we will continue to follow the Jane Considine scheme which proved successful last year. The children will write a detailed account of their holidays; write a script for their class assembly; and write a science fiction story about a trip to the moon. Alongside this they will study a variety of texts with a link to space – be it the science behind it, the explorers and pioneers or just a good space themed story. Reading: Children are still expected to be reading at home and should all have their own book to take home or one of their own choice, that is at the expected standard for their age . We ask that the children read at home at least 3 x per week. They have been issued with their own Planner in which a parent/guardian should sign to say your child has completed the required reading. The children are also expected to write down 5 new words they encounter during their reading each week and define them in the planner. The planners will need to be checked in school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. In class we have whole class guided reading on a range of fiction and non fiction texts, 3 x per week as well as daily story time. Some children requiring extra assistance will be heard regularly in class. You can help your child’s progress by hearing them read for at least 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success. Maths: We will continue to follow the White Rose Maths programme of study and for most of this half term the focus will be on place value: comparing, ordering and rounding numbers up to 1,000,000; Multiplication and division; and begin fractions. Children are also set 3 mathletics tasks each week which should be completed at home. Please email me if you require their login details. We also recommend they keep practising their multiplication tables on TT Rockstars at least 3 times a week, at home, as this will benefit their division and fraction work immensely. They will also continue to use TTRS in school on a regular basis. HUMANITIES HISTORY: Learning about Galileo, Neil Armstrong sir Isaac Newton and the Space Race of the 1950s -70s. GEOGRAPHY: As context for the space race we will be comparing USA with Russia in the 20th century. Also Earth viewed from space and its size and place compared to all planets in the Solar System, terrain/atmosphere/ of planets Science Researching facts and information about Planets and the Solar System, recognising Constellations, explaining day and night and famous scientists linked with forces and experimenting with gravity and Investigations: How do we know the earth is round? Can we track the sun? How does the Moon move? RE: In R.E. we will be learning more about other religions in our area and being respectful to each.
Computing: We will be looking at Systems and Searching. What is a system and how does it work? And how do we search online.
UNDERSTANDING THE ARTS ART: We have already made self-portraits in the style of Julian Opie. Future lessons will follow the new Art Access online scheme of learning. This term focussing on fashion design. MUSIC: We have started using a specialist music site called Charanga and are fortunate to have Mr Gleeson the music lead taking the lessons.
PSHE – Children will be looking at their mental health and well-being and dealing with feelings. P.E. – This half term in P.E. we will focus on gymnastics and Tag Rugby. P.E. Sessions are on Wednesday and Friday so please send your child to school already dressed in their P.E. kit.
Things to remember:
· All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. This should be taken home and washed every day.
Please read with your child for 5 minutes every day or questioning them on what they have read. It really is the key to all their future success.
· PE is on a Wednesday and Friday for this half term. Children should come dressed in their P.E. kit and will stay in it for the rest of the day. A change of clothing is not necessary. Children need to come to school in a white t-shirt and black shorts or black tracksuit plus trainers. · Spellings are put on the class blog on a Friday evening. The subsequent spelling practice of the words is the following Thursday. Spelling practice will take the form of dictated sentences. The children will receive a score out of 10 for the practiced words and another score out of 10 for the correct punctuation in their sentences and correct spellings of common words they should already know. · Mathletics homework will usually consist of 3 tasks I have set the children. Please ensure the children attempt these before playing on other areas of Mathletics as their scores are fed through to me and allow me to target any areas the children might be struggling with. If you have lost your login, please contact Mr Routledge · Children access TTRockstars 3 times a week in school, However, it is recommended that they spend 5 minutes on it every day to get super secure and quicker. · Children should not bring anything to school other than book bag, school book, planner, packed lunch and a water bottle. Hello again. This week we have enjoyed learning about the Chinese New Year in guided reading and more fraction multiplication in maths. The children also planned, completed and edited their persuasive letters to the owners of Harrods, no less. The children learnt more Bible stories from Jenny Leng and played volleyball in P.E. In computing the children learnt about conditional loops (ask them to explain) and how to program them into their sparkles with an off switch. In history the children learnt about the Factory Act of 1833 and working conditions for children in the factories during the industrial revolution. The children were quite shocked at the hardships endured and promised never to complain about having to tidy their bedroom or what's for dinner again! On Friday we used the VR headsets to explore Victorian London in anticipation of our new writing unit this week.
There are several children with many outstanding and incomplete assignments on Mathletics. Mathletics is a chance for your child to put into practise what they have learnt in class and should only take around 15 minutes each week. If you have lost your child's login, please feel free to email me so I can reissue it. I'm just thinking ahead to Wednesday, should you want something to keep them occupied for a while without need of supervision during the day.

Hello again, how is it Friday already?
This week the children began planning their letters to Harrods and revisited long division and fractions. They managed to program their crumbles to dance to a light show ; practised netball in P.E. ; learnt how the location of Leeds played a part in its rise during the industrial revolution ; and in science made their own pulley systems in order to rise (ha ha) to the challenge of lifting a weight from the ground without 'lifting' it by hand. We finished the week with some more relaxing sewing and cross stitching

We've certainly covered the full spectrum of activities in Year 5, this week. In R.E. the children were lucky to be visited by Jenny Leng who told them stories from the Bible. In PE we started the fitness program (Hey, if we have to make an extra effort in January...) and learnt quick cricket with YMCA. In writing they continued writing a persuasive letter to Scrooge and in keeping with the Dickens theme, read the opening chapter of Oliver Twist in Guided Reading. On Tuesday we attempted, and failed, to program a crumble but in true ASJ resilience we tried again the next day with far greater success. On Thursday the children became historical detectives to collate evidence to show what effect the Industrial Revolution had on Leeds and today we followed up on that (Leeds was a textiles behemoth) by finishing the day with some relaxing sewing!
Apologies for last week's errors in the spelling list (I double checked them as well!). Hopefully the ones below are correct. If you ever spot an error do let me know. Just to clarify, one word each week will be upon them to base a sentence, of their choosing, around. So it is important the children look up the meaning of any they are unsure of. This week's spellings focus on the suffix -ness and how it turns an adjective into a noun.

Hello, happy new year and welcome back to school! Was NYE only 6 days ago? I hope you've just about recovered. First off, may I say thank you for your generous cards and gifts over the Christmas period. It really was appreciated and was very kind of you.
This term is a short one and so I have thrust the children straight back into action this week. They have been telling me all about their Christmas holidays in their writing. In maths we have started multiplication of bigger numbers by 2 digit numbers using the traditional method that I'm sure you're all familiar with. As I keep telling the children, the maths itself is relatively easy, it's nailing the process that is proving a bit of a challenge for some. The solution is to practice, practice, practice. So if your child is struggling, encourage them to go on TTRS and to access the weekly homework on Mathletics. Our topic this term is the Industrial Revolution and its impact on Leeds. The children have found it a bit of a challenge to get to grips with what a seismic shift it was in our country's, and the world's, history and what changes it brought. So if you can offer anything in the way of information or help please speak to your child to help them understand as they struggle to imagine a life before screens let alone life 270 years ago!
This term we will also have a student in classroom observing and eventually teaching some of the lessons. I will also be in class throughout. Her name is Ms R.Mogg and I'm sure you will join me in welcoming her into the ASJ family.

Hello again, what a week we've had! This week the children completed an independent write and continued getting to grips with fractions. Watching the Nativity on Monday got us in the Christmas spirit just in time to celebrate Christingle on Tuesday (forgive me if I get the days wrong but right now Tuesday seems a million years ago!). The children then completed their double page spreads on the USA and spent R.E. looking in depth at the Incarnation part of the Big Story, before embarking on a pretty tough 3 days on end of term tests! Today has been pretty full on, just how we like it. We've had a Christmas celebration assembly with added wrapping paper! ; the santa/Christmas jumper dash ; and the school Christmas dinner. We even managed to squeeze some coding of microbits in this afternoon before we were defeated by our tech.
Because of all the tests I didn't have the heart to give them a spelling test as well, so we'll attempt that next week instead. Also spare time is at a premium at this time of year so hopefully that's one less task to squeeze in.
Next week is the xmas party on Tuesday afternoon. Children come to school as normal but can bring party clothes to change into after lunch. I have also said to bring in their own 'party pack' of food to eat mid afternoon. No sweets or nuts please. I will provide lemonade at school but if they don't want that then they can bring their own carton of fruit juice or water.
I think that's everything. If I don't get the chance to write another one next Friday I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and will see you in the new year.
