Welcome to Year 2
Year 2 Curriculum Map
Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to the Autumn term in Year 2! The children will be in class with Miss Jackson (Monday and Tuesday) and Miss White (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with additional support from Mrs Pullan. Above is our Long Term Plan for the year with details about the Year 2 curriculum. Below are some brief details about elements of our learning this half term and some key information to help the half term run smoothly. There are also Knowledge Organisers for our science, RE, history and geography for your information. Please do keep an eye out for regular information about our class on our blog (details for which will be on the school newsletter, although if you’ve found this, you’re in the right place!) and any last minute information or changes on the school app. If you have any questions, please contact both of us at anna.white@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk or emma.jackson@adel-st-john.leeds.sch.uk and we will reply as soon as we can.
Thanks for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Miss White and Miss Jackson
Reading: Children will continue to bring home books weekly and have 1:1 reading sessions in school. We will collect in returned books on a Monday and keep these until Tuesday when new books will be provided. Please aim to read these, and other books, with your child for 5 to 10 minutes each day. There is a yellow reading record that will come home with these books too, please indicate when a book has been read with a tick or initials and any comments if you feel necessary. Please return the reading record when books are returned. Reading in school will take place as part of our phonics sessions and children will also be heard 1:1 during the week.
Spellings: Spellings will be taught in class during our phonics lessons. There will be a weekly quiz of 5 words and a dictated sentence towards the end of each unit. These will all be taken from the review part of our phonics sessions and, as such, words will not be sent home to practice.
Below is a breakdown of the sounds and spelling patterns for the Summer term.
Handwriting: Handwriting sessions will initially take place every day. We learn cursive handwriting in Year 2. Below is a link to example joins we will be learning.
Cursive Letter Joins - Animations and Worksheets Letter version 2
PE: PE this half term is Dance on Tuesday and Striking and Fielding on Friday. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit – black jogging bottoms or shorts (if the weather is fit), white t-shirt, black jacket and trainers.
Things to remember:
- All children should bring a flask or bottle of water to school. Water only, please. This should be taken home and washed every day.
- Named pumps must be worn in school. Children should be able to tie laces quickly if they have lace-up pumps/outdoor shoes and pumps should be checked by a parent every half term to ensure they are in good condition to prevent trip hazards.
- Named, appropriate clothing for the weather should be brought every day – please ensure your child has a coat if rain is forecast or looks likely, especially as we head towards the winter.
- School Policy is that, other than for religious reasons, children should not wear jewellery in school apart from a watch. These need to be removed for PE lessons.

Welcome to Year 2!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
It’s been a great first week in Year 2! The children have all seemed excited to be back and have got stuck in with all their new learning!
We have been looking at a book called The Planet in a Pickle Jar, which is all about preserving our favourite things so they never disappear and our week’s learning culminated in us making our own pickle jars to save the world this afternoon! It was lovely to see so many creative ideas - trees, weather, animals, food - see for yourselves below!
We have also been working practically in maths, making numbers to 100 with various apparatus, counting in groups of 10 to help us count more quickly and easily.
Well done, Year 2! Have a lovely weekend ready for more next week!
Money challenge!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
In PSHE we have been learning about money and jobs. We had an additional challenge to work out the total if we had one of each note and coin.
We spent time using the money resources in class and working systematically to find the answer.
Alfresco Learning Workshop
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We had such a fantastic morning with Alfresco Learning to round off our topic about Neil Armstrong. The workshop had elements of history, science and maths with the focus being outdoor learning. Watching our rockets fly was a WOW moment! So much fun, learning and awe and wonder!
Forest School Painting
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Year 2 stayed together for some time in the conservation area on Wednesday this week. We spent time working in teams to build a shelter and then taking notice of our surroundings and creating these beautiful watercolour paintings. It was a lovely afternoon in the shade outside.
Healthy Living Week - Designing and making wraps
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
The children sorted food into the healthy food plate and then designed a wrap with fillings of the different food groups. They chopped, sliced, spread and grated different fruit, vegetables and cheese to go in their wraps. Once made, they could eat them and then evaluate the taste, saying what they liked and how they would improve them. They loved this activity and showed really good skills using the kitchen equipment. Well done Y2!

History of Adel walk
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
Year 2 had a very wet walk around Adel this morning as part of their local history topic. We stopped at lots of historically significant places on our walk. It’s fantastic to see all the children so enthusiastic about the history that is on their doorstep!
Arrays in maths
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
In maths this week, year 2 have been continuing their learning on Multiplication and Division. We have been focused on making equal groups and this week our learning has progressed to making arrays.
Learning about Jewish people
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
This week we have started our learning about Jewish people with a hands on session looking at a variety of items that might be special to a Jewish person. We looked and handled the objects first discussing what we thought they were. Then we found out their names and uses and thought about what the objects could teach us about Jewish people.
Drawing architecture
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We have started our new art unit for the term this week by looking at a variety of buildings to learn about architecture. We looked at old and new buildings from all over the world and used our observational drawing skills to sketch them. Then we did a single line drawing of an imaginary street with lots of different buildings. It was tricky to not take the pencil off the page!
Merry Christmas!
Peter Dalrymple (PDalrymple) on: Year 2 Class Blog
We would like to thank you very much for your generous Christmas presents. They are very much appreciated. We would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and the best of wishes for 2026!
